2026 Updates
The Idema Explorers Trail is being completed in phases, with several segments currently under construction, in design, or in the planning process. Today, more than 20 miles of trail are open for public use. Click here to view all completed segments.

Bass River Segment
The 7.4-mile Bass River segment will be constructed in several phases. Once complete, it will connect Riverside Park, Bass River State Recreation Area, and Eastmanville Bayou, feature extensive waterfront views along Max Bayou and the Grand River, cross the Bass River, and be almost entirely separated from roadways.
Phase 1
Project Status: Construction underway!
The contractor has fully mobilized on site. Clearing is complete and earthwork is in progress. This initial 3-mile phase extends from Riverside Park to the Max Bayou boat launch area.
Phase 2
Project Status: The contract for engineering services related to this project has been signed and approved. Engineering design will begin soon, with construction anticipated to begin in 2027.
The 0.7-mile phase will be constructed from the Max Bayou boat launch area to the Bass River Open Space – Walcott Site.
Bea Aldrink Eastmanville Legacy Segment
Project Status: Construction anticipated in 2026
Acquisition, design, and permitting have all been completed. Bids for construction of this project were presented at the May Ottawa County Parks and Recreation Commission and will be considered by the Ottawa County Board of Commissioners for approval on July 28.
The 2.24-mile segment will connect the neighborhoods of Allendale Township to the Grand River waterfront via Eastmanville Bayou Open Space. It will feature over a mile along a high bank adjacent to the Grand River and provide access to the eastern section of Eastmanville Bayou.
Allendale Segment
Project Status: Construction anticipated in 2028/2029
Our Transportation Alternatives Program funding application remains under review, and we are responding to requests for additional information as part of the evaluation process. Meanwhile, our engineering consultant, Fleis & VandenBrink, continues to work toward securing the required state wetland permit. MDOT has also identified potential funding for improvements to the M-45 intersection in 2029, which aligns well with the anticipated timeline for this trail segment.
Bend Area Segment
Project Status: Acquisition in process (65+ acres targeted); construction is TBD
The 3.52-mile segment will connect Bend Area to Grand River Park, providing scenic views of the Grand River, wooded wetlands, and surrounding natural areas.
